Since Charles and I got engaged last September, I have been watching the prices of airline tickets to find out when is the best to buy. I would recommend subscribing to an airline's price alerts, or whatever they call it, if you have a particular airline you would like to fly on.  Hawaiian has very good deals at least once a quarter.  Here is Hawaiian's price alert . The least expensive times to buy (from my observations last year) are October and January (the middle of January had the very lowest prices). The lowest price I have seen on Hawaiian out of Phoenix is $348 round trip. The lowest price I have seen out of Minneapolis/St. Paul is $634, but that was with 2 lay-overs; with only one lay-over, the price was $658.

Travel tips:

1. Fly on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday because there are fewer travelers on these days.

2. Buy airline tickets midday on Tuesdays because airlines tend to announce fare sales on Monday nights, so other airlines match those sales on Tuesday morning.

3. Stay over Sunday night because many hotels offer their lowest rate for a Sunday night stay.

4. Check with your credit cards and other memberships to see if they offer any elite status, upgrades or other perks.

5. Chose a travel agent who is a “top producer.” Travel agent who send the most travelers to leading hotels/airlines/cruise lines will be able to get the most perks, such as resort credits, complimentary meals and free upgrades. Ask an agent whether she/he is on any travel companies’ advisory boards.

Lodging:

Charles and I are renting a house on the North Shore, in Hauula, HI. You do not need to stay on the North Shore, even though that is where all of the events will be taking place, because O'ahu is only 40 miles across. So, regardless of where you chose, you will be with in an hour's drive.  Please note, if you are staying in Waikiki, the parking there is expensive.

There are also many hotels along the South and East Shores. If there is a hotel you are interested in, I would recommend checking to see if they offer any good packages.  Currently the packages available are through the end of 2012, so I would wait until January to look for May promotions. For example, when we went to Hawaii in January, 2012, we booked out flight and hotel together through the Waikiki Gateway Hotel. If you divided out the prices, assuming a $400 round-trip airline tickets on Hawaiian Airlines (which was the current rate), the cost ended up being $63 per night at the hotel.

We have been trying to working with Turtle Bay Resort (the only resort on the North Shore) to set up a block of rooms. After 5 months they still have not set up the block of rooms, so you are interested in staying there, please contact Elisa or Charles directly and we will see what we can do.

 Hawaiian airlines currently  has a promotion for its Visa Signature Credit Card which has an $79 yearly fee.
